Description

Black and white photo of Old Yale Road (now Fraser Highway) in Langley Prairie; looking east towards what is now the downtown one-way street from just west of Brackman-Kerr Milling and Feed Store. The Lyttleton Block is the one-story brick building in the centre and to the right. Cars, cyclists and pedestrians and be seen. 204th St. (Topping Road) goes off to the right. The "LOUR" part of the PURITY FLOUR sign on top of Brackman-Kerr can be seen on the left.

Brackman-Ker Milling & Feed Store

Brackman-Ker operated in many BC communities, including a location on the north side of Fraser Highway at Innes Corner that opened in 1917. For many years it was a local landmark, as the grain elevator was one of the tallest buildings in the area. The store provided residents with a variety of feed, the most popular being a dairy mix and a laying mix for poultry. Brackman-Ker was for years a competitor for Buckerfields, but was ultimately absorbed by the other company. The old office, warehouse and elevator tower on Fraser Highway were demolished in 1954.

Langley Prairie

Langley Prairie became Langley City in 1955.

Lyttleton Block

The Lyttleton Block was completed in 1924 by local entrepreneur Thomas Lyttleton. It was Langley Prairie's first brick building. The government liquor store moved here a few years after the building was built, and other businesses to set up shop here include Duckworth's store, McBurnies Variety Store, Cliff Sims Ladies Shop, Macartney's Cash Grocery, and Sam Brown's barbershop and billiards. Although it has seen many changes over the years, the Lyttleton Block still stands at the southeast corner of 204th Street and Fraser Highway.
