School children in Murrayville, possibly at Belmont School, and possibly a high school class. Back row includes (l-r): Elizabeth (Nellie) Smith (later Lattimer), unknown, unknown, William Lawrence (?), Herman Hagelstein, and Edward Berry. In the middle row (l-r): unknown, unknown, Fred Roberts (?), William Berry, Robert Hazeletter Simonds, Fred Forman(?), Vera Norman(?), and unknown. The front row consists of (l-r): Joe Forman(?), Harry Cassidy (?), and unknown.

Belmont Superior School

Belmont School was located in Langley School District, later School District 35 (Langley). A one-room school located just south of Murray's Corners was built in 1891, and was the earliest public school in Langley. In use until 1911, a two-room school was then built at the top of the hill on Old Yale Road on the site of the present Murrayville School. One room was later sub-divided into three rooms, and two more rooms were added in 1913. In 1913-14, the name was changed to Belmont Superior School and high school classes were offered. In 1918, sections of the school were renamed Murrayville Public School and Langley High School. The facilities were shared by the two schools until 1922, when a lack of space forced the high school to move to other quarters.

Berry, Edward Weldon (Eddie)

Edward Weldon Berry was born in Ontario February 6, 1894, and is the oldest son of Lydia and John Walter Berry. Edward was a graduate of arts at UBC. He was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University and was attending St. John's College until his death January 23, 1920 at the age of 26. The cause of death was heart failure, caused by having sustained shell shock and gassing in WWI. Lieut. Berry had served overseas at the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passchendaele, before being gassed at Loos in 1917.

Berry, William Elton "Bill"

William Elton "Bill" Berry was born in New Westminster on February 14, 1900, to parents John Walter and Lydia Berry. He enlisted in the first World War, serving in the Royal Air Force. He died in Toronto on October 27, 1918 from a meningitis epidemic that was going through the camps.

Lattimer, Elizabeth Ellen (Nellie) (nee Smith)

Elizabeth Ellen (Nellie) Smith married David Andrew Lattimer in Milner on September 29, 1921. Nellie died in Milner on February 5, 1956 at the age of 61.
