Description

A navy blue hard cover guest book containing autographs from 1958 - 2016. The navy blue cover has gold font which reads "Guest Book / The Corporation of the Township of Langley". The first page has been signed by HRH Princess Margaret on 22 July 1958 during her royal visit; it was later laminated.
The guest book contains many memorable historical moments within the Township of Langley, including the naming of Muriel Arnason Library, Derek Doubleday Arboretum, and the dedication ceremony for Patti Dale Animal Shelter. The last entry is the signature of the honorary Consulate General of Solomon Islands, dated 17 Oct. 2016.

Doubleday, Derek John

Derek John Doubleday was born in Bottesford, England on June 13, 1923. He attended King's School in Grantham. He served as a navigator in the RAF during the Second World War. After arriving in Langley he served the Township of Langley for 35 years, first as the Chief Clerk at the Langley Municipal Hall, and as an administrator in April 1981. He was honoured as a freeman of the Township after his retirement. He also served on the labour relations board for 5 years, and was a Civil Marriage Commissioner for 49 years. Doubleday was a member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries for many years. He also was very involved with the United Church. He died in White Rock on October 23, 2003.

Princess Margaret

Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was born 21 August 1930. She was the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and sister of Queen Elizabeth II. She held the title Countess of Snowdon by marriage. Princess Margaret visited Fort Langley on July 22, 1958 as part of a tour of British Columbia to mark the centennial. She officially opened the restored Fort Langley Historic Site and toured the Langley Centennial Museum during her visit. She died on 9 February 2002.

Township of Langley

The Township of Langley, B.C., comprising Langley, Fort Langley, Murrayville, Langley Prairie, Derby, Milner, Aldergrove, Otter, Salmon River Uplands, and Glen Valley, was incorporated in 1873. The City of Langley, B.C., covering the Langley Prairie region, was incorporated as a separate entity in 1955. Langley was named after Thomas Langley, a prominent stockholder in the management of the Hudson's Bay Company. He had inherited his brother's stock in the Company in 1793 and was selected as a member of the committee in 1807. He held this position until his death in 1829.
