Description

Cotton Christening Gown made for Kathleen Kells (nee McVicar) by her mother Ivy McVicar, who was a dressmaker. She did all the eyelet work and other embroidery on it. The gown has eyelet work and embroidery, and pale pink ribbons around the sleeves. Kathleen Kells wore it in about January 1926, and it was later worn by two of Kay's children in 1950 and 1956.

Crompton, Ivy (nee Chatt, earlier McVicar)

Ivy was born Ivy Mabel Chatt in Hampton, England, in 1903. She studied dressmaking in London and she came to Canada in 1921 with her family, setting in North Burnaby. She worked in a dress shop in downtown Vancouver. Ivy married Archibald "Archie" McVicar on November 5, 1924. They would be together for 31 years, and she lived in North Langley until 1955. She also wrote for the Langley Advance in the 1930s. After Archie passed away in 1956, Ivy moved to 198th Street in downtown Langley and took another job in a dress shop nearby. Ivy married Frank Crompton in 1957. Ivy was a member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church and sang in the choir. Her daughter with Archibald, Kathy, married into the Kells family. Ivy passed away on February 7th 2002 in Langley.

Kells, Kathleen Laura (nee McVicar)

Kathleen Laura McVicar was born on December 29, 1925, in Burnaby, to Archibald and Ivy McVicar, nee Chatt (1903-2002). She married Frederick Ellis Kells (April 9, 1923 - ) in 1946, and they had twin boys in 1950 and a daughter in 1956. She worked for the Income Tax office between 1944 and 1946. She was interested in local history and wrote about the Port Kells area. She volunteered at the Langley Centennial Museum. Kathleen passed away in 2012 at the age of 86.
