The Langley Centennial Museum currently maintains a collection of over 9000 photographs, 2000 archival documents, 9000 objects, 500 works of art, and 300 oral history recordings. This collection, spanning hundreds of years, is a wonderful window on the past and present life of our community.

Booklet : 4 sheets of white paper folded in half and stapled together; celebrating the Langley Gospel Hall's 90th Anniversary, 1912 - 2002; front includes colour photo of the Langley Gospel Hall; back features photo of Mr. S.E. Mathews on his 90th birthday with the home Bible study group he still led at the time; booklet tells the history of Langley Gospel Hall from its founding in 1912 through the construction of the first building in 1931 and enlargement in the 1990s, including testimonies and recollections of selected congregation members.

Brown, Alice

Langley teacher and administrator. Alice Brown Elementary School is named after her. She began her 47 year teaching career at Belmont School in 1924, and taught until 1975.

Brown, William

THERE ARE FOUR WILLIAM BROWNS in Langley's history. This William Brown was a son of Robert Brown. He lived in Langley Prairie, and is of no relation to Fort Langley's William Harvey (Billy) Brown.

Began in 1912 on land owned by William and Kathleen (Katie) Brown. Later moved to Murrayville.

Mathews, Samuel Edward

Samuel Edward Mathews was born in 1893 in England. Mr. S. E. Mathews arrived in Langley from Buxton, Derbyshire, England on March 30 with his wife Amanda E. and their three boys Peter Henry (age 7), Frank Samuel (age 6), and Stephen (age 4). The depression and lack of employment in England forced Samuel Mathew to immigrate to Canada. They chose Langley because they had been given free accommodation by his brother Herbert Mathews. Samuel was trained in the grocery business and was a traveling salesman, who took orders and did deliveries etc. His first job was painting the Milner Food Market and he also picked rocks in Mufford's farm fields. Samuel decided to start his own grocery business when the Murrayville Cash Grocery came up for rent. He ran his store by offering no credit (cash only); taking orders and delivering them; servicing areas not being served; and accepting payment in the form of fresh produce. He acquired the lot on the south-west corner of the five corners intersection and by 1934 built the new store. This building is now known as the Mathew's Cash Grocery, or the Bishop House.
