McClughan, Rachel (nee Oakes)
Rachel Oakes was born in Milner on October 15, 1887 to parents Hannah Worrell and Robert Allan Oakes. Her brother was Ernest Oakes. She attended school in Milner before moving to Vancouver with her family. She worked for O. B. Allan Jewellers in Vancouver for 8 years. She married William Henry (Bill) McClughan of Langley on November 30, 1925. The couple built a home on 200th Street (Carvolth Rd) just north of where the freeway now is. The freeway and Colossus movie theatre, previously the Keg and Thunderbird Equestrian Centre, stand on the McClughan farm. Rachel stayed on the farm after her husband died, moving to Fort Langley in 1971. She was active in the Milner United Church. She died on April 14, 1979, and was buried in the Fort Langley Cemetery. Rachel also went by Rochelle.
Rachel was interviewed along side her brother Ernest in 1976. The interview is available at SR-023.
