People/Subject
Berry General Store (Fraser Highway)
Harry (W.H.) Berry opened his store at 23210 Fraser Highway in 1930. Before this, he had run another store on Old Yale Road, but moved to this location when Fraser Highway became part of the Trans-Canada Highway system. Much of the local community survived the Depression due to Berry's extension of credit. Berry's nephew Jack Maitland began working in the store in 1946, and managed it until 1980. He and then partner Ernie Morelli sold and turned the management over to Kyung Il Chun. During the 1980s (and up until at least 2012) the store was run as "Ye Olde Country General Store."
Shigehiro, Otoichi
Otoichi Shigehiro was born on April 1, 1893. He married Asano Morikawa (1903-1996) and they had ten children, including Kyoto, Aigi, Taror (sp?), Jimmie, Cheko, Ted, and Elsie Yuriko. They lived in Port Hammond, Britannia Beach, Port Moody, and White Rock before moving to Langley in 1931. The family consisted of ten children including Sumi, born the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor, when in May 1942 the family was interned and they were moved to Raymond, Alberta. They lived there until May 1948, when they moved to Barnwell, Alberta; in 1957 they moved to Taber, Alberta, and in 1961 they moved to Lethbridge. Otoichi Shigehiro passed away on February 28, 1970.
