James Mowat Sr. came from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1894 and stayed in Doer Langley for a year. He returned in 1901, with his family (wife Christina ans son James Jr.) following him the next year. Maghie, Annie and George were born in following years. The family lived on Hudson's Bay Street before moving into this newly built residence in 1909. The house was enlarged with the addition of a front vestibule and a rear kitchen in about 1917. James Mowat Sr. passed away in 1973 but Jim Jr. lived in the house until 1975. Mowat Sr. had a blacksmith shop on the property; he didn't operate it as a business, but he did help others.
Mowat, James, Sr., 1866-1943
James Mowat Sr. was born on May 11, 1866. He married Christina, and they had children James (b. 1901), Maggie (b. 1903), Annie (b. 1905), George (b. 1909), and Charles (b. 1911). James came to Canada in the 1890s, and his wife and child, James Jr., joined him in 1902. James was a jack-of-all-trades, and had worked in farming and mining before having a family. He died May 6, 1943.
