People/Subject
Borden, Lorris E., 1877-1963
Lorris Elijah Borden was born in Canning, Nova Scotia on June 20th 1877. He studied medicine at Dalhousie University. Dr. Borden served as the doctor for the 1903/4 expedition to take possession of Ellesmere Island, an island in the arctic. He was also the MLA representative for Nelson from 1928 until 1933. He served as an Army Medical Corps major in both World Wars. He was married to a nurse named Katherine Ethel Gray at the time of his death, but appears to have been married previously to Neva Zwick (1884-1953) Between the wars he lived in Coleman, BC. After WW2 Dr. Borden moved to Langley and lived on 56th Ave. He was well known in Langley as a practising semi-retired doctor. His memoirs, "Memoirs of Lorris E. Borden, B.A., M.D., C.M.: Pioneer Surgeon in Nelson, B.C." were published in 1996 by Edward L. Affleck. A collection of art which he collected from the Inuit is now in the Canadian Museum of History.
