Description
Katie Brown (left) and Mary Hayward in front of a shrub outside of the Brown house on Yale Road (Fraser Highway). Taken the same day as 4960.
People/Subject
Brown, Kathleen (Katie)
Katie was born in Ontario in 1877, but had immigrated to North Dakota with her family. She married William Hyde Brown there in 1903, and moved to the Canadian Prairies. Upon eventually moving to Langley, the Browns had three children: Alice, WILLIAM Reid (went by Reid) and Diane. Alice Brown became a very well-known teacher in Langley, even having a school named after her; Reid was a driver for Buckerfields, and Diane married Ross Geidman and left the community. The Browns had a farm on the south side of Yale Road, west of Hunter Road (200th Street). It was roughly 30 acres, featured one of the largest orchards in the area, and derived most of its revenue from its dairy cattle. Williams family came from a Plymouth Brethren tradition, and in 1912 he donated land for a gospel hall on the northeast corner of his property. He built the hall and a house there, too, for the congregation's pastor. William was very generous, always willing to lend money to neighbours in need and hardly worring if he was repaid. He died December 23, 1942, and the farm was split between his children and eventually sold for commercial development. Katie died in Westbank 11 years later on March 14, 1953 at the age of 78, and was buried in the Murrayville Cemetery.

Hayward, Mary Hannah (nee Orchard)
Mary Hannah Orchard was born in 1881 in Ontario. She married William Charles Hayward (1870-1963). They moved to BC and ran a sawmill in the Kootneys for a while before moving to Vancouver in about 1905. They didn't stay there long, and moved to Langley in about 1906, to an area known as Fruitvale. The family was friends with the William and Katie Brown family that lived a short distance to the south, on Yale Road (Fraser Highway) just west of 200th Street. The couple had children, including a son who was killed overseas and another named Gordon. They attended Sunday School at the Langley Gospel Hall in the 1920s. Mary died on January 5, 1956 at the age of 75, and was buried at the Murrayville Cemetery.
