Johnson, Alice
Alice Johnson (1933-) is the daughter of Margaret Sophia and Eskil Kilian Johnson of the Willoughby area of Langley. She is a lifelong Willoughby resident. She is also an avid volunteer and a member of multiple groups and societies, including the Willoughby Community Hall and Willoughby School Committees, the Township’s Heritage Advisory Committee, Langley Heritage Society, Douglas Day Committee, Pitch-In B.C., and the Langley Centennial Museum's History Group. In 1992, she began the Willoughby Women’s Community Institute. She is secretary of the Willoughby Community Hall Society, and has been since 1992. She was also chairperson for the restoration of the original Willoughby Elementary School, which was slated for demolition but has been preserved as a heritage building. Johnson was awarded the Eric Flowerdew Volunteer Award in 2017 for her volunteer efforts. At Douglas Day on November 19, 2019, Alice Johnson was given the Freedom of the Township.
Stewart, Vera (nee Schatz)
Vera Schatz was born in Delia, Alberta in 1926 to parents Simon and Alice Schatz. She had a brother, Jim Schatz. The family moved to the Willoughby area of Langley in 1931, and moved into a house on Lee Road (on the corner at James Road) built by Simon Schatz in 1932. Vera attended Willoughby Elementary School from 1932-37, Milner Elementary School from 1937-39, West Langley Elementary School from 1939-40, and Langley High School from 1940-1944. She was a member of the Willoughby United Church, Sunday School and Choir, the Murrayville United Church-Mission Band, and the Milner United Church Young People group. She was involved in the Langley 4H Jersey Calf Club, and at LHS was involved in the Hi Y club and in the John Leonard operettas performed. She married Andrew Stewart in 1955, and the couple had three children: a son, Glen, and daughters Laurie and Robyn.
Willoughby United Church
The Willoughby United Church was built in 1931 and closed in 1964. The church was built by volunteer labour under the direction of Jack Bray. The location was 8263 - 208 Street. The church later became a residence.
