Description

Soft cover white ration book part of MSS 324; "Spence Wm. R." is handwritten on the front, as well as "R.R. 1" and "Coghlan"; The Canadian coat of arms is printed at the top center; "RATION BOOK 1" is printed in black towards the top left. Five pages with some stamps remaining on the inside.

Spence, William (Bill)

William "Bill" Spence was born in Langley in 1898 to parents Peter and Jane Spence. He served with the 72nd Division Seaforth Highlanders in World War I, and returned to Coghlan in 1919. He met Florence Mouncer in London during the War, and wrote her letters to convince her to come to Langley. She did, and they married in 1920. The couple had three children: Ernest, Bill, and Julia. They moved from the family farm to Telegraph Trail, before settling on Armstrong Road. Bill earned his living through fishing and logging. Bill died in 1970.
