The house was likely built by a man named Mr. Appleby ca. 1910 and is known as the Pattenden residence after Alfred and Ellen Pattenden who moved to Fort Langley from England after the First World War. Alfred Pattenden was a blacksmith and died in 1925 in a logging accident. Alfred and Ellen had three children. Ellen moved back to England for 20 years after Alfred's death while their son, Reg Pattenden, stayed in Fort Langley and became the collections manager for the Fort Langley National Historic Park.
