Description
Blair sugar maple tree in the fall, adjacent to the home and barn on the Blair farm, Langview.
People/Subject
Blair Sugar Maple Tree
The tree, located at 5404-216 Street, was brought from Ontario by Jonathan Culbert, the eldest son of Thomas Culbert and Ellen Culbert (nee Atkinson). Thomas and Ellen had come to Langley from Ontario in 1880, and felt homesick for Ontario. Jonathan brought several sugar maple seedlings and planted them at the Culbert home to remind his parents of Ontario, circa 1890. The farm was later sold to Eliza and George Blair, the daughter and son-in-law of Thomas and Ellen Culbert. The farm eventually became known as Langview Farm under the ownership of the Blair family, who continue to reside on the property to this day (September 2004). Only the one sugar maple survives.
Term Source: Doris Blair - letter to Community Heritage Commission, August 2004.
