Around 1877, John Smith arrived from Winchester, Ont., via California, and bought a quarter section of the Hudson's Bay Co. Farm. In 1885, he married Elizabeth Flower, who had come from Ireland to visit her aunt, Mrs. James Grey. This small house, built of milled lumber, was built at that time. Smith was a farm implement salesman and farmer. He was also well known locally as a Councillor and School Trustee. When Smith built a new larger house in 1911(the second John Smith Residence), he moved this smaller building across the street onto the property of Robert Oakes. Smith died in 1918 at the age of 69.
