The Church of Saint John the Divine, known as the oldest wooden church in British Columbia, was built in 1959 by the Royal Engineers under Col. Moody at Derby near Fort Langley. Reverend William Burton Crickmer and his family came from England by steam and sail to Fort Langley as the first Hudson Bay Company Chaplain and preached the very first sermon in this church. His responsibilities as a Church of England Chaplain included ministering to the Royal Engineers at Langley and to the Fort Staff.

The church was closed in 1860 and was unused until 1882, when it was dismantled and floated across the Fraser by barge to its present location at 21299 River Road in Maple Ridge, BC. It is still a fully operational church and over the years has been visited by several dignitaries.
