The Knowles Residence, located at 2421 200 Street in the Brookswood-Fernridge community of Langley, B.C., was a historic building, characterizing a typical farmhouse of the period. The house was presumably built circa 1938 as the year was inscribed into the stone fireplace and the panelling in the house was reputed to be from B.C. Tel office that was demolished during the 1930’s. Neighbouring the Langley/Surrey borders on the corner of 24th Avenue and 200th Street, the early 20th century farmhouse was built by Mr. Knowles, who worked as an engineer with the B.C. Telephone Company.

Common of the late Craftsman style of the 1930’s, the charming house featured triangular eave brackets, exposed rafter ends, windows with straight leaded panes, and an inset front verandah. The site had featured very mature perimeter plantings, mature hollies and ornamental shrubs.

On Saturday, September 23rd, 2008, the Knowles residence was deliberately set a blaze by arsonists and was destroyed. The house, which at the time of the fire was abandoned, caught fire just before 11:20pm, after which two different fire halls were called out to attend the blaze, but they were unable to get the fire under control before it had engulfed the residence. All the utilities to the boarded-up house had been disconnected, suggesting the fire was deliberately set. Neighbours reported seeing a group of people in black hoodies leaving the scene around the time of the fire. Police say that the arsonist removed the plywood and broke the windows of the boarded-up house before setting it on fire. 24 hours earlier, a small cottage behind the farmhouse on the property had been set a blaze. Firefighters were able to get the fire on the small structure under control before it destroyed the dwelling.
