Communion set in oval wood box.

Description

Communion set of small cups in an oval wood box. The set was donated by the Sperling United Church through Fort Langley United Church; the set belonged to the Sperling United Church before the congregation amalgamated with Fort Langley. The set consists of a mahogany tray (A) and lid (B), and 36 small plastic and glass cups (C-LL).

The Sperling area was historically in the Harmsworth district but got its name in 1910 when the B.C. Electric Railway arrived and a station was built where the Interurban line crossed Brown Road (240th). The station and surrounding area were named after R.H. Sperling, the general manager of the BC Electric at that time.

Sperling United (Methodist) Church

Sperling United (Methodist) Church is located at 7206 240th Street. In 1910 the village of Sperling was established as a flag stop on the British Columbia Electric Railway line. The next year the Reverend F. L. Carpenter was appointed, and he oversaw the building of the Methodist church, which was opened in 1912. The church became a United Church after the unification of 1925. The hall was added to the back in 1953. The church closed to services in 1969, with the membership transferred to St. Andrew's United Church in Fort Langley. The building was turned over to the Township of Langley in 1973. It was later restored by the Langley Heritage Society and is used as a private residence.
