Schatz House
The Schatz house was located on Lee Road (74th Avenue west of 208th Street), in Willoughby. Simon Schatz built the house in 1932.
Schatz, Alice
Alice Hutchings was born in Bromley, Kent, England, on 28 May, 1887. She married Simon Schatz, and they had five children: Edna May (1909), Frederick Allan (1911), Catherine Pearl (1912), James Howard (1924), and Vera Madeline (1926). The family moved to Langley in the summer of 1931. They purchased a farm on Lee Road (74th Ave.) just west of 208th Street in Willoughby, and had 5 acres in the northeast corner of Lee and James Rd., and 5 acres on the southeast corner. Simon built a house there in 1932, and they also built a barn, garage and chicken house, and planted an orchard. Simon and Alice were involved in the Willoughby United Church, where Alice was the president of the Ladies Aid, and both were members of the Crib Club. Alice died on May 17, 1975 at the age of 87.
Schatz, Simon
Simon Schatz was born in Wallace, Ontario, on July 5, 1883. He married Alice Hutchings, and they had five children: Edna May (1909), Frederick Allan (1911), Catherine Pearl (1912), James Howard (1924), and Vera Madeline (1926). The family moved to Langley in the summer of 1931. They purchased a farm on Lee Road (74th Ave.) just west of 208th Street in Willoughby, and had 5 acres in the northeast corner of Lee and James Rd., and 5 acres on the southeast corner. Simon built a house here in 1932, and they also built a barn, garage and chicken house, and planted an orchard. Simon and Alice were involved in the Willoughby United Church, where Simon was the treasurer, and were both members of the Crib Club. Simon died on August 21, 1962 at the age of 78.
Stewart, Vera (nee Schatz)
Vera Schatz was born in Delia, Alberta in 1926 to parents Simon and Alice Schatz. She had a brother, Jim Schatz. The family moved to the Willoughby are of Langley in 1931, and moved into a house on Lee Road (on the corner at James Road) built by Simon Schatz in 1932. Vera attended Willoughby Elementary School from 1932-37, Milner Elementary School from 1937-39, West Langley Elementary School from 1939-40, and Langley High School from 1940-1944. She was a member of the Willoughby United Church, Sunday School and Choir, the Murrayville United Church-Mission Band, and the Milner United Church Young People group. She was involved in the Langley 4H Jersey Calf Club, and at LHS was involved in the Hi Y club and in the John Leonard operettas performed. She married Andrew Stewart in 1955, and the couple had three children: a son, Glen, and daughters Laurie and Robyn.
