Derby was a village established around 1858, just west of Fort Langley. It included a jail, shops, and saloon. The village was built in hopes of being the Province's first capital but Governor Douglas did not think the village had a strategic location that would keep the village safe from invasion and decided to place the first capital at New Westminster. The village consisted of a row of modest shops, saloons, and hotels designed to serve the needs of miners travelling to the goldfields in the Fraser Canyon. The village was entirely destroyed by fire on July 24, 1859. Approximate location of the site today is the Derby Reach Regional Park.
