Description
House at 4681 240th Street.
People/Subject
Norman Residence
Located at 4681 240th Street. In 1891 this property was deeded to Mrs. Melvina Lucinda Norman; her husband, Benjamin, was an architect from Quebec, and may have been responsible for the striking design of the house. Alhough the date of construction is uncertain, records indicate that by 1910 telephone service was installed here. In 1916 Benjamin Norman died in a tragic fall from the roof. This superbly maintained residence is an excellent example of the Craftsman style of architecture. Broad, low-pitched gable roofs, a full open front verandah, triangular eave brackets, multi-paned windows and the integration of house and landscaping defined the modern concept of domesticity during the Edwardian Era. The only visible change to this home is the addition of a sympthetically designed family room at the southwest corner. Source: Langley's Heritage: A Listing of Heritage Resources.
