People/Subject
Mayne (formally Brand, nee Burkill), Joyce
Joyce Burkill was born in Shanghai, China in 1900. Her family were English textile merchants. Her father was Albert William Burkill, son of Albert William Burkill, who had moved to China in 1866 and founded a company there. Her mother was Katharine Kidd. Joyce appeared to have grown up in a well to do household. She attended boarding school in England from 1910-1919 before returning to Shanghai. She married John Kenneth Brand with whom she had her son James (Jim). They left Shanghai in 1931, and came to Langley in 1950. She got involved in the hospital board here. Kenneth died and she married Herbert Mayne when she was 71. When she was 100 years old Joyce moved into Langley Gardens, a retirement community. In some records her last name is spelled "Main".
