Cole, Mary Jane (nee Mavis)

Mary Jane Mavis was born October 4, 1869 in Jarrow, Durham, England to Alexander and Mary Mavis. She married Harry Cole on August 5, 1891, in Victoria, BC. She died October 30, 1932 in Victoria.

Ada Mavis was born November 10, 1876 in Jarrow, Durham, England, the second youngest daughter to Alexander Mavis. Ada married Francis John Gavin of Vancouver on October 26, 1904. They had a beautiful house on Burnaby Lake. She had three daughters, Mary, Beatrice and Rhoda. Ada died on January 24, 1965 at the age of 88.

Hobson, Laura (nee Mavis)

Laura Mavis was born December 23, 1879 in Jarrow, Durham, England, the youngest daughter of Alexander and Mary Mavis. Laura married George Henry Lawrence Hobson in Langley on October 25, 1904. Laura died on March 3, 1977.

Alexander Mavis (1825-December 31, 1905) came from England to California for the gold rush in 1849, and then to BC for our gold rush in 1858. He returned to England and married Mary Fiddler-Horn Nicholson in the mid-1860s. The couple had 6 children in England before returning to Langley in 1887. Children include Francis John (1871-1936), James Alexander (1872-1926), Ada (1876-), Lily Dawson (1874-1957), and Laura (1879 - ). Alexander and his family farmed some of the land that had previously belonged to the Hudson's Bay Company. In fact, much of the land in east Fort Langley was once owned by Mavis. Mavis and his wife died in 1905 and are buried in the Fort Langley Cemetery, but there are still many descendants in the area.
