Description

Program from the Township of Langley's Douglas Day Dinner (part a): glossy 8.5x 11" sheet of paper folded in half; featuring a photo of Harmsworth Hall on the cover; cover reads: "Douglas Day / Program / Monday, November 19, 2007 / Langley Celebrates Its Pioneers"; interior pages contain information about Douglas Day and the "2007 Douglas Day / Banquet Program" schedule; the back cover has an image of a John Innes painting, 'James Douglas Taking the Oath as First Governor of BC, AD 1858'; there is a second folded piece of gloss paper (slightly less that 8 x 10") inserted inside the program (part b); the insert (b) lists the "2007 Douglas Day Pioneers"; both the program and the insert are printed in shades of green.

Douglas Day

Douglas Day celebrations held every November in the Township of Langley, B.C., commemorate the founding of the mainland colony of British Columbia by Sir James Douglas at Fort Langley, B.C., on November 19, 1858.

Springbrook School (Harmsworth Hall)

Springbrook School is now known as Harmsworth Hall. The school opened in 1923 and was purchased by the Springbrook Social and Improvement Society in 1935. The Hall sat on two acres which were donated by the Titmus family for the Springbrook School.
Marv Woolley recalls his mother and uncle, Bert Williams, both attended the school. Uncle Bert recalled going to that school as far back as 1896. Lawrence Alsager and the Marv Woolley removed the top layer of the fir flooring during the 1978 renovations and discovered the original school floor. They saw the patterns of the wood stove, teacher's desk, student desks, etc.
