Title
White cotton barber's cloth.
Description
Barbers' cloth, white cotton. This cloth belonged to Sam Brown, who owned a barber shop in Langley Prairie.
People/Subject
Brown, Sam
Sam Brown arrived in Langley Prairie in 1928. He established his barber shop on the south side of Old Yale Road west of the railroad tracks, across from Vancouver Milling and Grain. It was in competition with Thomas J. Calow's shop. He hadn't been there long when the fire of May 1928 destroyed his shop. Insurance estimated the damage to be about $2000. The building was rebuilt. Brown remained at this location until 1959. He married Lavinia Brown. The couple lived at 21016 Old Yale Road. Sam was also active in the the sports community and the board of trade. He died at 83 in 1970.
Sam Brown's Barber Shop
Sam Brown's Billard Hall and Barber Shop was established during the 1920s by Sam Brown, a local barber. It was destroyed by a fire in May of 1928. The block was rebuilt and the barber shop was there until 1959. It was a favourite spot for little boys to get hair cuts as he rewarded the kids with a chocolate bar.
