People/Subject
Glen Valley School
The first Glen Valley School was built in 1885 on the Gilbert McKay Farm on Jackman Road (272) and around 88 Avenue. The school was a typical one room building with no central heating, running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity. The school served the community until a new school was built in 1924 on land donated by John Cornock, an early settler to Glen Valley, on 272 Street.
At that time the students could start school in February or September. The first teacher was Elizabeth Anne McKay, niece of Donald McKay, who lived in Glen Valley. Emily MacMillan (nee Parkinson) and her daughters Kate and Pat also taught at the school. Ethel Probert attended the school and remembered there being around 25 students in grades 1-8. The Glen Valley school ran like any other school with books, games, sports teams, Christmas concerts and dances, until it was closed in 1935, and the students were bused to Fort Langley Elementary and Langley High.
