Beales, John Huson
John H. Beales was born July 25, 1924 in Winnipeg and moved to Langley in 1933. He graduated from Langley High School in 1942 and joined the RCAF. He returned after the war and married Marjorie Graham. They had 8 children: John, Bob, Ann, Ted, Ian, Bruce, Barry, and Russell. A local businessman, John was a School Board Trustee, an Alderman in the late 1970s - 1980s, and served two terms as Mayor of the Township of Langley from 1987 to 1993. He was an accomplished pilot. John died in 2003.
Beggs, Trevor Harper
Trevor Harper Beggs was born in Tyvan, Saskatchewan in 1920 to parents Ron and Myrtle Beggs. Involved in sports, particularly curling, Trevor later worked for the General Motors plant and then CLRM radio in Regina. In 1941 he enlisted in the RCAF and served for 5 years. In 1946 Trevor and his family moved west to start a hardware business in Aldergrove. Known as "Marshall Wells - Beggs Hardware," the store was located on the main street (Fraser Highway). He met Elsie Newman here and married her in 1947, and the couple had three children: Dianne, Myrna and Murray. Trevor was the chairman of the Aldergrove Community Park and was instrumental in getting the first lit ball diamond in BC there, so the British Empire Games was held there in 1954. He served on the Langley District School Board, with the Aldergrove Elks, with the United Church, and with Lacrosse in the Fraser Valley. He was a co-creator of the "Langley Walk." He won the Eric Flowerdew award in 1974 for outstanding volunteer contribution to the community. He died on December 27, 2005, and was interred at Langley Lawn Cemetery.
Doubleday, Derek John
Derek John Doubleday was born in Bottesford, England on June 13, 1923. He attended King's School in Grantham. He served as a navigator in the RAF during the Second World War. After arriving in Langley he served the Township of Langley for 35 years, first as the Chief Clerk at the Langley Municipal Hall, and as an administrator in April 1981. He was honoured as a freeman of the Township after his retirement. He also served on the labour relations board for 5 years, and was a Civil Marriage Commissioner for 49 years. Doubleday was a member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries for many years. He also was very involved with the United Church. He died in White Rock on October 23, 2003.
